Applications for $1.5 Billion in Recovery Act Funds Now Available

Grants from National Institutes of Health Will Support Science and Research, Help Grow the Economy

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced today that applications for a total of $1.5 billion in grants funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act are now available. The grants will fund scientific research, construction and improvement of research facilities, and the purchase of scientific equipment.

"NIH is extremely grateful to President Obama and the Congress for recognizing both the economic and health impacts of biomedical and behavioral research," said Acting Director Raynard S. Kington M.D., Ph.D. "The science funded by the Recovery Act will stimulate the national economy, and have a profound impact on people's health for many years to come."

The NIH will allocate the Recovery Act funds as follows:

  • At least $200 million in Challenge Grants to support research on topics that address specific scientific and health research challenges in biomedical and behavioral research that would benefit from significant 2-year jumpstart funds;

  • $1 billion in construction grants to help build new or improve existing research facilities and help grow the economy;

  • $300 million in shared instrumentation grants to facilitate the purchase of research equipment that will enable scientists and researchers to complete their critical work.

  • National Science Foundation - $3 billion with $2.5 billion for research, instrumentation, and facilities modernization; $400 million for major research equipment and facilities construction; $100 million for education and human resources.

  • National Science Foundation Recovery Web Site

  • NASA - $1 billion with $400 million for climate research; $150 million for aeronautics; $400 million for exploration; $50 million to help restore NASA-owned facilities damaged in 2008 by natural disasters.

  • Department of Energy Office of Science - $1.6 billion for energy research and $400 million for the new DOE Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA-E).

  • National Institute of Standards and Technology - $360 million for construction of research buildings with $180 million allocated to a “competitive construction grant program for research science buildings.”

  • Funds, generally, are expected to be disbursed and spent by September 2010. Each agency is developing a plan, guidance, and processes. This site will be updated regularly to reflect the most up-to-date information from the agencies.

    SPIN is an up-to-date listing of national and international government and private funding sources. It is the number one database of its kind and used by over 700 institutions worldwide.

    SMARTS/GENIUS
    SMARTS/GENIUS is an electronic matching and funding opportunity notification system which provides investigators with a direct and targeted electronic link to comprehensive, current U.S. Federal, non-Federal and international research funding information. The investigator profile information is collected via forms on GENIUS, and used at InfoEd for matching with the SPIN (Sponsored Programs Information Network) database. These two data sources interact so that "matchmaking" is conducted on a daily basis. "Matched" programs are then automatically e-mailed to the individual researchers - EVERY DAY!

    Duquesne faculty members are strongly encouraged to register as SMARTS users. The Office of Research offers this service free to faculty. To enter your profile CLICK HERE.

    SPIN now includes links to four additional search engines including:
